KISS Distillery
The Story of Kiss Distillery
“Kiss” is the brand name of JR Toppidrinks Co., Ltd., located in Cha-Am.
The owner of the distillery, Mr. De Wolf, comes from Belgium and has a lot of experience with alcohol. He started making his first distiller by himself when he was 17. Before coming to Thailand, he ran a brewery (Wieze) in the middle of Belgium, where he brewed strong craft beers with much success.
The aroma distiller we use comes from the “Schwarzwald" in Germany.
In 2014, he brought his high-tech “Muller” aroma distiller, which he had used before in Belgium, to Thailand.
Here, we make aromatic fruit rums, London Dry Gin, and “Rhum Agricole,” the real sugarcane rum. We now also have a continuous distiller with 30 steps that allows us to create the finest-tasting and odorless vodka.
Getting a license here in Thailand is not easy.
We had to wait three years before we could start distilling and another year before we could begin selling. The Thai government is very strict in controlling distilled products, so whenever we launch a new product, we must send samples to the government laboratory, and we must continue to do so every six months.
Most distilleries in Thailand (around 4,000!) use a by-product from sugar production called "molasses." This product contains a high level of chemical residue, which is why the government strictly checks its quality.
We do not use this by-product. Instead, we buy real sugarcane from the foothills near the national park “Kaeng Krachan,” where there is more rainfall and many farmers grow sugarcane. These farmers do not burn the leaves like many farmers still do in the north of the country.
We crush the sugarcane on our farm and bring the sweet fresh juice to Cha-Am, where we let 16,000 liters ferment in stainless steel tanks. After fermentation, we obtain a sugarcane wine with 11% alcohol.
The alcohols we produce vary in taste. For the Smooth Rum, we bring out many rum flavors from the sugarcane wine. For the fruit liqueurs, we keep the taste soft, as we later need this rum for macerating the fruits.
From 2024, we started producing spirits for our customer from Germany under the brand name “Bangkok Rock.” We also export to Germany and sell all over Europe through Amazon with great success.
In Thailand, the law is very strict. We are not allowed to use color in our spirits, nor can we choose the alcohol percentage freely. Only 28%, 30%, 35%, and 40% are allowed.
Even product names like Rum, Gin, Whiskey, and Tequila are reserved by law.
That is why you will not find the name “Rum” on our bottles.
